Program Details

The WCJC Cosmetology Program teaches the foundational skills for entry-level salon placement. Learn the necessary skills to excel in hair coloring, chemical reformation, hair cutting, styling, and much more. Career achievement in the cosmetology field is as much about professionalism as it is about skill. Our program has the same policies, codes of conduct, and professional expectations you will encounter in your future jobs. With discipline, hard work, and continued education, you can build a prosperous career in the beauty industry. The cosmetology program offers a full-time day program that you can complete in 11 months. Classes are held Monday to Thursday 8AM to 3:30PM. 

You will be required to register for classes each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). 

New students are only accepted for the Fall and Spring semesters. Courses are held at the Wharton and Richmond campuses.

Upon satisfactory completion of the program, you will receive a certificate and be eligible to apply for the state board examination to become a licensed cosmetologist. Find entry-level work as an esthetician, make-up artist, nail technician, hairdresser, product educator, and more!

Program Requirements

The Cosmetology program requires that students complete a program application and purchase instructional supplies and materials specific to the program.
In addition to applying to WCJC, Cosmetology requires a program application. Complete the application and return it to the cosmetology department via email to cosmetology@wcjc.edu. A faculty member will follow up with you to schedule an orientation.

Meet the Faculty

Ms. Kuehn is a licensed cosmetologist and instructor committed to improving the quality of cosmetology education. As the program director, she is responsible for developing and delivering the curriculum for the program. Mrs. Kuehn completed her cosmetology training at WCJC in 1987. She began teaching for WCJC in 1990, and in 1997 became the department's program director.

Ms. Kolafa received her Cosmetology license in 1982 and her instructor license in 1985 from Brazosport Beauty School. As part of her career, she was an instructor at Visible Changes for 10 years. Mrs. Kolafa has been teaching WCJC cosmetology students since 2001.

Ms. Alvarado received her cosmetology license in 1987 from El Campo High School and her instructor’s license in 1990 from WCJC. She received her Texas Educator Certificate in 1994 from Texas State University. She has been teaching WCJC cosmetology students since 1997.

Ms. Staude is an alumnus of WCJC’s cosmetology program. She received her cosmetology operator's license in 2012 and her instructor's license in 2015. She has been teaching WCJC cosmetology students since 2016.

Ms. Steffek earned her cosmetology operator’s license and cosmetology instructor’s license from WCJC. She has been teaching WCJC’s cosmetology students since 2016.

Ms. McDonald received her Cosmetology license in 1982 from Rosenberg Beauty College. While owning her salon for more than 16 years, she attended Institute of Cosmetology in Houston, Texas, where she received her Instructor license in 1994. She was employed at Fort Bend ISD as a Cosmetology Instructor and has been a WCJC instructor since 2022.

Ms. Doyle received her Cosmetology license in 1993 and Instructor license in 2020, both from Wharton County Junior College. She is a Cosmetologist that has many years of experience in the hair salon and has been employed with WCJC since 2022.
