WHARTON – The Wharton County Junior College Choir will cover songs from “West Side Story,” the “Phantom of the Opera” and “Chicago” at the upcoming concert, “Salute to Broadway.” Scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at the Horton Foote Theatre on the Wharton campus, the show is open to the public and free of admission.

The choir will cover Broadway tunes from the 1980s as well as hits from the Golden Age of Musical Theater, a popular time for musicals that encompassed the time period between 1943 and 1964.

WCJC Choir Director Dr. Karl Paoletti said that musicals present a unique learning opportunity for the students.

“You have to be a singing actor because of the extreme range of emotions in these songs,” he said.

For “Salute to Broadway,” the WCJC Choir will be accompanied by the Wharton Community Chorus.

Paoletti expects a dynamic, inspirational show.

“The students are really excited because this is some of their favorite music,” he said. “And when you perform something you love, it shows.”
