WHARTON, TEXAS – More than two dozen runners and walkers recently braved cold and rainy conditions to take part in Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizens Program’s 5K Stride and Stroll. Despite the inclement weather, the event raised $8,285 for the benefit of program participants.
“The conditions were far from ideal, yet that didn’t stop us from having a successful event,” said WCJC Senior Citizens Program Director Traci Myers.
Proceeds from the event go directly to the program to aid in providing services to area seniors. Meals, health screenings and social events are provided regularly at centers in Wharton, El Campo, Eagle Lake, Weimar and Columbus. Hot meals are also delivered to homebound seniors daily.
The program is free of cost to area residents 60 years of age or older.
The 5K Stride and Stroll is the program’s primary fundraiser. This year’s event included three groups of participants representing area businesses: the “Shimmy Shakers” from Schulz Insurance Agency, the “Jingle Gals” from Boling Independent School District and the “Wild Bunch” from Angels Care Home Health.
Awards were given in the following categories:
