WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College Drama Department’s first production of the Fall 2024 season tackles questions of life, death, and what we do with the time we have. The play is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 31, through Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. Show time is 7 p.m. The public is invited and the show is free of admission.

“I wanted my students to have the opportunity to work on a darker, deeper piece,” said WCJC Instructor of Drama Jami Hughes. “This is a rich play that takes on a serious subject matter. I am so proud of the maturity and professionalism my students have demonstrated and I can’t wait for the audience to see this.”

Written by Michael Cristofer, “The Shadow Box” is an award-winning play that looks at the lives of three terminally ill patients who live in separate cottages at a hospice facility. Each is visited by family and close friends. The result is a sobering look at time, relationship and the inevitability of death.

“Although the play considers the final days of these characters, it’s more about life and how best to live it until the last moment,” Hughes said.

She noted that the play is for mature audiences due to language and mature subject matter.

As is the case in many of Hughes’ productions, students will have a significant role in how the play is presented as they oversee the design, lighting and color scheme.

Cast and crew for “The Shadow Box” include Makaya Brown of Bay City, Valerie Brown of Eagle Lake, McKenna Flores of Richmond, Rodrigo Gutierrez of Cypress, Danté Hancock of East Bernard, Evony Holloway of El Campo, Ryan Martin of Needville, Aidan Meek of Wharton, Hannah Purnell of El Campo, Emily Soto of Rosenberg, Ketanya Spencer of Rosenberg, Seth Thayne of Wharton and Lisette Vargas of El Campo.
