WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College Band’s first concert of the Fall 2021 season will be an interactive experience with audience members pitting their musical knowledge against each other in the hopes of walking away with a trophy.

During the “Name That Tune” concert, three contestants will be chosen from the audience and compete to see who can guess the proper name of the song being played based on only a handful of notes.

The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Band Director Joe Waldrop said he chose the contestant-based format as a means of fostering audience participation.

“I like our concerts to be fun and enjoyable and I thought this would be something that everyone could get involved in and hopefully have a good time,” Waldrop said.

WCJC Band students have worked diligently to prepare for the concert, learning a host of popular songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Waldrop is also bringing in a few band directors from area schools to help out with some of the selections requiring more specific instrumentation.

Waldrop will further lean on fellow WCJC Fine Arts Department faculty and staff members to assist with the concert’s technical aspects. Division Chair Patrick Ralls will serve as master of ceremonies, Division Secretary Vicki Hudson will keep track of contestant scores and Instructor of Speech Jim Bob Conner will handle video.

A special trophy, created by Waldrop, will be awarded to the winner of the “Name That Tune” competition.
