WHARTON, TEXAS – Little Red Riding Hood. Peter and the Wolf. The Three Little Pigs. The Wharton County Junior College Drama Department’s upcoming children’s show will blend elements from all three classic childhood fairytales, while sprinkling in some humorous twists along the way.
Penned by British playwright Catherine Bush, Cry Wolf! is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 3 and May 4 at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The show is open to the public and admission is free.
The comedy will also be presented to area elementary schools during a daytime performance on May 2 as the production is part of the WCJC Drama Department’s annual “children’s show” series.
WCJC Instructor of Drama Greg McLarty said viewers of all ages will get a kick out of the quick-moving, entertaining show.
“It’s a different kind of show and should be a lot of fun to watch,” he said.
Cry Wolf! will lean on few props – centering primarily on a grove of trees on an otherwise bare stage – relying instead upon dynamic action sequences between the actors. Several fighting scenes are included in the production, with the characters wrestling on the floor, leaping through the air and struggling in mock conflict. Additional visual appeal results from the actors portraying typically inanimate items like straw, sticks and bricks.
“The kids choreographed most of these scenes themselves,” McLarty said.
McLarty noted that the actors used skills developed during a workshop hosted at WCJC several years ago by Frantic Assembly, an international theater company known for high energy, physically-demanding dramatic techniques.
Students participating in the show include Kodi James of Boling, Sofia Uribe of Rosenberg, Juan Monroy of Edna, Troy Weidt of Tomball, Kayleigh Frank of Richmond, Kaylin Meek of Hungerford, Maddie Wright of Edna, Shalissa Ashcraft of Sealy, Alyssa Flores of Galena Park, Makayla Biskup of El Campo, Jerry Ramirez of Wharton, Leo Pratt of Katy, Camille Thrash of Wharton, Trace Morris of Needville, Alexis Flores of El Campo, Tyler Korff of Wharton and Juan Adan of Wharton.
