WHARTON, TEXAS – Wharton County Junior College’s Cosmetology program prepares graduates for a variety of cosmetology-related careers by offering courses in nail technology, skin care, hair design and styling, hair cutting, coloring and highlighting. Graduates can expect to learn these skills in 11 months’ time and after earning their Level I certificate, will be eligible to take state licensing examinations.
Cosmetology program Director Jacqueline Kuehn has witnessed a substantial amount of evolution in curriculum since she began teaching at WCJC 35 years ago.
“The program has changed tremendously over the years. As trends and technology change, we have to change with it,” Kuehn said.
The Cosmetology program is offered at both the Wharton and Richmond campuses. Students gain experience through a host of technological advancements and techniques all taught by the college’s highly experienced staff. Members of the community are also encouraged to make appointments with cosmetology students for haircuts, coloring, manicures and other salon services. Such services provide students with real-world work experience.
The job outlook in cosmetology is positive. The United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the job market for cosmetology-related fields is expected to grow by seven percent from 2023 to 2033. Kuehn has seen this growth first hand.
“The job outlook is great,” she said. “Salons are looking for motivated, competent, professional stylists with a good work ethic. Our graduates are employed all over the state of Texas. Whether they choose to stay local or explore other locations, salons are always looking for great employees.”
Kuehn noted that cosmetology is the ideal career for both entrepreneurs and those wishing to work for an established salon.
“Cosmetology is a very exciting industry,” she said. “The industry is always evolving and incorporating new technologies and trends. Whether your goal is to own your own business and salon or rent a chair at an established location, your potential for success is unlimited.”
Students interested in the program can apply in the spring or fall semesters. Spots are limited. For more information, visit the college’s website at www.wcjc.edu.
