WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College choir will present patriotic songs during the “Portraits of America” concert, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, on the Wharton campus. This particular show will be presented in the Pioneer Student Center rather than the Horton Foote Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public.

“This is our first patriotic-themed concert,” said WCJC Choir Director Dr. Karl Paoletti. “I was inspired to present a patriotic-themed concert while watching the Olympics this summer and also by our upcoming presidential elections.”

The concert will feature American folk music, spirituals, Broadway tunes and songs from the Great American Songbook. Selections include “There’s No Business Like Show Business” from Annie Get Your Gun, “Dear Theodosia” from Hamilton, “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”

Paoletti noted that the concert’s varied musical style was a great learning experience for the students.

“You can’t perform a song from Hamilton the same way you sing a folk song from the 19th Century by Stephen Foster,” he said. “All of the students have really terrific voices and it’s been a lot of fun and hard work putting this show together. I hope the audience will be inspired.”
