WHARTON, TEXAS – Three Wharton County Junior College rodeo team members will travel to Wyoming next month to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).

More than 400 competitors from across the nation are expected to participate in the CNFR, scheduled for June 11 through June 19 at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, Wyo. Men and women will both compete, hopeful of winning a coveted national title.

WCJC Rodeo Coach Sean Amestoy said his team is well prepared for the stiff competition.

“All three are very capable of winning a college title,” he said.

Three WCJC rodeo team members qualified for the CNFR after impressive finishes in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Southern Region:

  • Connor Atkinson of Needville – the freshman cowboy was Southern Region Champion Tiedown Roper in calf roping
  • Mayce Marek of Arp – the sophomore cowgirl finished third in the Southern Region in goat tying
  • Logan Moore of Pleasanton – the freshman cowboy was the Southern Region Reserve Champion Heeler in team roping

In addition to their accomplishments in the arena, Atkinson made the Dean’s List for the Spring 2021 semester and Marek made the Dean’s List for both the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters.

“All three are not only great competitors but great people,” Amestoy said.
