WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizens Program will host two barbecue dinner fundraisers this spring to benefit senior citizens in Wharton and Colorado counties.
The Colorado County event is planned for 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 5, at St. Paul Lutheran Church (201 Veterans Drive) in Columbus. Barbecue chicken plates are $12 each and will be served to-go only. The food is catered by Peter’s BBQ of Ellinger. Tickets are available by calling 979-732-5606.
The Wharton County fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, at the LaDieu Technology Center (911 Boling Highway) in Wharton. Barbecue on a bun plates are $10 each, and will be available drive-through only. Meals are catered by Mikeska’s Barbecue & Catering of El Campo. Call 979-532-6430 for tickets.
Senior Citizens Program Director Kimberly Willis said proceeds from both events will help the program continue to offer much-needed services.
“Too many senior citizens in Texas are left behind, alone and hungry, struggling to stay independent and healthy,” she said.
The program is funded through a combination of federal funds, local donations and fundraisers. Its mission is to provide services to senior citizens aged 60 and older, including educational programs, health screenings, recreational activities and “Meals-On-Wheels” delivery for homebound residents. All services are offered free of charge to program participants.
The program’s headquarters are in Wharton at the LaDieu Technology Center, with additional locations in Columbus, Weimar, Eagle Lake and El Campo.
“Contributions to these fundraisers will ensure that our precious senior citizens are served meals and provided with opportunities for a better quality of life,” Willis said.
