CAPS AND GOWNS - WCJC students prepare for 2019 commencement

WCJC students gather in the gymnasium on the Wharton campus during last year’s graduation ceremonies. This year’s commencement exercises will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Gene Bahnsen Gymnasium in Wharton.

WHARTON, TEXAS – Wharton County Junior College will confer degrees on Saturday, May 18, in two commencement ceremonies held at the Gene Bahnsen Gymnasium on the Wharton campus.

Students graduating with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching or an Associate of Applied Science in Manufacturing, Nuclear Power and Process Technology degree will participate in the 10 a.m. ceremony. All other Associate of Applied Science degree recipients will attend the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Guest speaker for the events will be Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar.

Two graduates from the Realizing Our Academic Reward (ROAR) Academy will participate in the morning ceremony. ROAR is a collaborative effort between WCJC and Wharton Independent School District that enables high school students to complete up to 60 college level credit hours while still enrolled in high school, all at no cost. Seven graduates from the inaugural ROAR class participated in last year’s commencement exercises.

As was the case last year, there will be an “overflow” area set up in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building for those attending the ceremonies. Once the gymnasium reaches capacity, guests will be directed to the expanded area for a live streamed broadcast.

The gym will open at 8:45 a.m. for the morning ceremony and at 12:45 p.m. for the afternoon session.

Graduates wishing to participate in either of the ceremonies are encouraged to attend a rehearsal on Friday, May 17. Graduates walking in the morning ceremony will rehearse at 10 a.m., while those walking at the afternoon session will rehearse at 2 p.m. Both rehearsals will start promptly at the scheduled times and participants are encouraged to be on time.
