Kimberly Willis, Director of the Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizens Program, is hoping for plenty of community response to the upcoming Chicken Spaghetti fundraiser. Funds raised during the Feb. 28 event will allow the program to continue to provide services to the area's seniors.

WHARTON – The Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizens Program will host a chicken spaghetti fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the LaDieu Technology Building, located on WCJC’s Wharton Campus.

Tickets to the drive-through only event are $10 each and are currently available at the Wharton site or by calling 979-532-6430. Pre-sale tickets are required. Volunteers are needed and may call the office for information on how to assist.

The program is funded through a combination of federal funds, local donations and fundraisers like the chicken spaghetti dinner. Its purpose is to provide services to senior citizens aged 60 and older, including educational programs, health screenings, recreational activities and “Meals-On-Wheels” delivery for homebound residents. All services are offered free of charge to program participants.

Senior Citizens Program Director Kimberly Willis is in the process of offering additional activities, projects and presentations. One such addition is a quilting and crocheting club.

“My plans are to implement more activities and events into our program offering change and opportunities for our senior citizens to better themselves and become self-sufficient,” Willis said. “My hopes are to make our program a model program.”

The program’s headquarters are in Wharton at the LaDieu Technology Center, with additional locations in Columbus, Weimar, Eagle Lake and El Campo. Anyone interested in learning more about the program or in volunteering to assist with the chicken spaghetti fundraiser can call 979-532-6504 or visit WCJC’s website at www.wcjc.edu
