WHARTON, TEXAS – Wharton County Junior College is offering a streamlined set of courses designed to assist job seekers in finding quick employment while also benefiting Hurricane Harvey disaster victims.
The Hurricane Harvey fast-track training courses, offered through WCJC’s Continuing Education Department, provide quick training in careers that are currently in high demand due to the ongoing hurricane reconstruction. Hurricane Harvey was a Category 4 storm that devastated the Texas Gulf Coast in August of 2017, causing an estimated $125 billion in damage. WCJC’s Wharton campus was spared any direct impact, but dozens of students and college employees experienced catastrophic flooding.
Funding for the training is provided by The Texas Workforce Commission and the National Department of Labor.
“These courses allow participants to become employed quickly in a field that will assist with Hurricane Harvey rebuild,” said Tamara Sealy, WCJC’s Continuing Education Corporate Coordinator.
Courses offered through the program include electrical, welding and HVAC. Classes will be held at the Wharton campus. Course schedules and registration deadlines vary, though many deadlines for the first round of training are set for the end of April.
Additional schedules for the coming year will be released soon and published on the website. Anyone interested in applying for a course must contact the Continuing Education Department at 281-239-1531.
Financial assistance may also be available for qualified students.
“The courses are open to anyone; however, certain individuals affected by Hurricane Harvey can receive funding for training from the local workforce offices,” Sealy said.
