BROADWAY CLASSICS Choir concert features show tunes

Wharton County Junior College Choir members Jacob Alexander, left, and Michael Garza, both of Wharton, rehearse for the upcoming concert, "Broadway Classics." The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the Horton Foote Theatre of the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus.

WHARTON, TEXAS – The Wharton County Junior College Choir will perform well-known Broadway show tunes at the upcoming concert, “Broadway Classics,” scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the Horton Foote Theatre in the Duson-Hansen Fine Arts Building on the Wharton campus. The show is open to the public and admission is free.

The performance will include songs from Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Kiss Me Kate, Grease and The Music Man, to name a few.

“These are popular and well-loved tunes that the audience will recognize and enjoy,” said WCJC Instructor of Music and Choir Director Dr. Kevin Klotz.

Preparing for the event has been a challenge as several of the selections are arranged as medleys, requiring precise timing and a smooth transition between contrasting rhythm and speed. Even more important has been the need for the students to perform the music in an expressive fashion.

“Correct and beautiful singing is not enough. It is crucial that each singer’s face communicates and reflects the meaning of the song’s lyrics,” Klotz explained.

He said the choir members have put in the time required to achieve such a goal.

“The students are doing a great job of learning the selections and ‘becoming’ the music,” Klotz said. “The time they’ve put in will translate to a truly memorable show.”

Klotz encouraged the public to come out and enjoy the show.

“We are all very excited about this concert and hope that you will be able to attend,” Klotz said. “Thank you so much for your support of these talented kids and of our choral program here at Wharton County Junior College.”
