A pair of up-and-coming indie rock bands will take the stage during the Wharton County Junior College Spring Showcase 2017.
Scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Pioneer Student Center on the Wharton campus, the event will feature two student bands: Fail Mary and Offset. Both are comprised of current or former WCJC students. The concert is free of admission for all WCJC students and staff. The general public is asked to pay a $2 cover charge or donate a non-perishable food item. Proceeds will benefit Wharton’s Share.
The WCJC Office of Student Services is sponsoring the annual event, which began several years ago under the auspices of Alex Gardner, WCJC’s men’s residence hall supervisor. Gardner believes the concert is an important way for student musicians to gain exposure.
“This concert provides a platform for students to showcase their talents under their own artistic direction while still being held to the standards that WCJC hopes to instill in all its students,” Gardner said. “WCJC takes pride and excels in providing academic and career opportunities to all that attend the college, but the college experience is not just limited to the classroom.”
The concert will feature original indie rock band Fail Mary, which is based in Wharton and comprised of drummer Chris Glass and singer/guitarist Connor D. Jones. The band formed in 2014 while both musicians were students at WCJC. Since then, the duo has recorded a six-track demo, The City Skyline, played a host of venues and prepared a debut album, Showcase Your Sorrow, which was released earlier this month. Offset plays heavy alternative/indie music and is based in south Texas. Members include WCJC student and El Campo resident James Espericueta on guitar and vocals, El Campo resident Koy Kresta on guitar and vocals, Bay City resident Courtney Grigsby on drums and El Campo resident Christian McLain on bass and vocals. McLain is the son of WCJC Dining Services Supervisor Robin McLain.
Gardner anticipates a good turnout for the concert.
“I hope that this night of music will entertain the student body and the community as well as foster a positive experience and connection to all Pioneers past, present and prospective,” he said.
