WHARTON, TEXAS – In compliance with the Texas Penal Code, concealed carry license holders on Aug. 1 will be allowed to carry concealed firearms into certain areas of Wharton County Junior College’s campuses.
State statutes currently prohibit the possession of firearms on the premises of institutions of higher learning. The new Campus Carry Law allows two exceptions to this law:
- A commissioned peace officer acting in an official capacity (as a WCJC student or visitor) may possess a handgun
- A person possessing a valid License to Carry (LTC) may carry a concealed handgun into certain areas of the institution that are not deemed Exclusion Zones
The Campus Carry Law takes effect on Aug. 1 for WCJC’s campuses at Wharton, Bay City and Richmond. WCJC’s Sugar Land campus falls under University of Houston Campus Carry guidelines, which took effect this past year.
