Exemptions

You are exempt from taking part or all of the TSIA if you meet one or more of the exemptions below and have provided official documentation to support the exemption to WCJC Admissions Office.  

ALL tests must be taken no more than 5 years ago.

 

SAT Exemptions:

  • For tests taken prior to March 2016 and no more than 5 years ago:

Math

500 Math with

1070 Composite (Math + Reading)

English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

500 Critical Reading with

1070 Composite (Math + Reading)

  • For tests taken March 2016 and later and no more than 5 years ago:

Math

530 Math

(no composite required)

English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

480 Evidence-Based reading and Writing (EBRW)

(no composite score required)
  • Official score reports must be received from CollegeBoard for exemption fulfillment.  Personal copies of score reports do not fulfill exemption requirements.  Visit CollegeBoard to request that your official SAT scores be sent to WCJC (School Code: 6939)

  • Personal information on score report must match personal information in WCJC school records exactly in order for scores to be added to a student record.  

 

ACT Exemptions:

  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 AND

Math

19 Math

English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

19 English

  • Official score reports must be received from ACT for exemption fulfillment.  Personal copies of score reports do not fulfill exemption requirements.  Visit the ACT website to request that your official scores be sent to WCJC (School Code: 4252)

  • Personal information on score report must match personal information in WCJC school records exactly in order for scores to be added to a student record.  

 

GED Exemptions:

  • The following minimum scores must be reached for exemption.

Math

165   Mathematical Reasoning

English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

165  Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)

  • Official certificate/transcript must be received by WCJC in order to receive exemption.

 

HiSET Exemptions:

  • The following minimum scores must be reached for exemption.  Tests must be no older than 5 years old but taken before 8/31/2021.

Math

15   Mathematics subtest

English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

A combination of each of the below minimum scores must be reached in order to exempt from ELAR.

15   Reading subtest  AND

15   Writing subtest  AND

4      Essay

  • Official certificate/transcript must be received by WCJC in order to receive exemption.  

 

TAKS Exemptions:

  • A student with a TAKS exit-level Math score of at least 2200 is exempt from the Math requirement. 
  • A student with a TAKS exit-level English/Language Arts score of at least 2200 and an essay score of at least 3 or above is exempt from the Reading and Writing requirements.

 

STAAR Exemptions:

  • A student with a STAAR Math score of at least 4000 for Algebra II is exempt from the Math requirement. 
  • A student with a STAAR English/Language Arts score of at least Level 2 (4000) for English III is exempt from the Reading and Writing requirements.

 

Veteran Exemptions:

  • Students serving on active duty as a member of the U.S Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been serving for at least 3 years prior to enrollment are full TSI exempt.
  • Students who on or after August 1, 1990 were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Texas National Guard, or a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces are full TSI exempt.

 

Degree, Transfer and Previous Course Work Exemptions:

  • A student who has earned a degree, associates or higher, from a Texas public college or university is full TSI exempt.
  • A transfer student from a private or independent institution of higher education or an accredited out-of-state institution of higher education and who has satisfactorily completed college-level coursework as determined by the WCJC Registrar is full or partial TSI exempt.
  • A student completing an HB 5 course related to reading, writing, and/or mathematics according to the terms of an articulation agreement between WCJC and the local school district will have a TSI wavier for two years at WCJC.
  • A student who completes a designated college-level reading, writing and/or mathematics course with a C or higher will be TSI satisfied. Completion, with a C or higher, of a designated college-level writing course will result in the student being TSI satisfied in reading and writing.
