NOTICE: The Fire Academy will be postponed until the Spring 2015 semester
WCJC operates a fire academy, certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. This 640 hour academy has been divided into 7 college credit classes, Fire Certification 1 through VII. Our graduates will receive 26 college credits for successfully completing the program.
Classes are offered as a daytime program at the main campus in Wharton, and are limited to 25 students per class.

Basic Fire Fighter Certificate: All topic areas and hours have been approved by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. All courses must be completed as a block program. Upon successful completion of all courses the student will be eligible to take the state licensing examination to become a certified paid firefighter in the state of Texas. Students will also be eligible to sit for the state certification exam for Driver/Operator-Pumper, upon successful completion of that portion of the Fire Academy.
The Fire Academy currently only offers classes in the Fall and Spring semesters. In addition to the WCJC application process, students must apply to the Fire Academy to receive the necessary information packet/forms.
We also offer in-service training for both paid and volunteer area fire departments.
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Must meet all admission requirements to Wharton County Junior College
- Successfully complete all forms required by the WCJC Fire Academy, which involves passing a physcial and drug exam
- Have NOT been convicted of any felony offense
- Have NOT been convicted of an offense (above a Class C misdemeanor) within the last five years
Academy students will need to register for all courses, which will be completed in one semester.
