MAJOR LEAGUE ADVICE - Professional baseball coach visits Pioneers

Gary Jones, a member of the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, shares tips with members of the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers baseball team during a recent visit to the Wharton Campus.  The father of WCJC Instructor of Speech Tiffany Jones, Jones is a Henderson native and began his baseball career at Paris Junior College before eventually signing with the Cubs in 1982 as a free agent. Jones has had a stellar career in coaching, with 27 years of experience guiding players and managing teams in both the minor and major leagues. He was the Cubs’ third base coach when the team won the World Series in 2016, the first time the organization had done so since 1908, and is currently manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. During his visit to WCJC, Jones stressed hard work, discipline and a strong mental outlook, reminding the young players of the importance of fundamentals.
