PELL GRANTS AVAILABLE YEAR ROUND

April 06, 2018

WHARTON, TEXAS – Additional Pell Grant funding may help some Wharton County Junior College students continue their coursework during the summer.

Beginning for the summer 2018 term, students can apply for an additional round of Pell Grant funding. Students enrolled in at least six credit hours during Summer I and Summer II qualify to apply for additional federal funding – even if they’ve received the maximum Pell Grant disbursement during their spring and fall semesters.

“This is a really good program,” said WCJC’s Vice President of Student Services Dave Leenhouts. “I think this funding will be a powerful tool at the disposal of students who formerly were faced with having to work during the summer due to a lack of financial aid.”

Priority deadline for processing the summer Pell Grants is Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Grants will continue to be processed after that date, but on a first-come, first-served basis.

WCJC’s Summer I session begins on Monday, June 4, 2018. The Summer II session begins Monday, July 9, 2018.

Leenhouts said students who have already completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have been awarded a grant for the fall or spring semesters will not need to complete a new form for the summer session.

They will, however, need to complete a “Summer Financial Aid Application” as soon as possible and submit it to the WCJC Financial Aid Office. Forms are available on the WCJC website – www.wcjc.edu – under the “Pell Grant Update” tab, which is located under the “Financial Aid” tab under “Administrative Offices.” More information on the new Pell Grant disbursements is also available at the same location. Students may also call the WCJC Financial Aid Office at 979-532-6345.

Pell Grant funding is administered by the federal government and is designed to provide funding for low-income students. The grants do not have to be repaid. Financial need is determined by the U.S. Department of Education based upon an applicant’s FAFSA.
