During the recent Friends of the College Appreciation Dinner – held on the Wharton campus – area businesses, foundations and individual patrons were recognized for providing scholarships, equipment and funding programs. Currently, there are around 67 scholarships available.

“It is difficult to measure the positive impact these scholarships have made on our students,” said WCJC President Betty McCrohan. “Without this financial assistance, many students would simply be unable to pursue higher education. The generosity of our donors is changing lives in remarkable ways.”

WCJC Board of Trustees Vice-Chair Amy Rod and WCJC Foundation Vice-President Suzanne Armour also spoke during the dinner, thanking supporters for their ongoing help. Four student scholarship recipients expressed their thanks as well, mentioning how the funds have been critical in allowing them to stay in school and finish their respective programs.

Student speakers included:

* Chris Reyna – recipient of the WCJC Alumni Association Scholarship and the WCJC High Achievers Scholarship

* Becky Martinez – recipient of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship

* Harley Braun – recipient of the Johnson Health Occupations Scholarship

* Crystal Muro – recipient of the Johnson Health Occupations Scholarship

Although this was the first Friends of the College Appreciation Dinner for the college, plans are to make it an annual event.
